Lux Lunae is a Winterboard theme for iOS 7/8 supporting iPhones 4, 4S, 5, 5c, 5S, and 6 (6+ support coming soon). It aims to remain true to the core iOS 7 design principles of modern lines, simple bright colors, and translucency while giving the home screen a darker, more subdued appearance. Icons are drawn on a smoked transparent background inspired by the Notification Center. This allows more of your wallpaper to shine through, and gives a greater sense of depth and motion when used with the parallax effect. The icons feature simple, modern glyphs drawn with iOS 7/8’s icon grid in mind. The glyphs and icon borders are drawn from iOS 7’s color palette, giving the theme a consistent, uniform appearance. Lux Lunae is Latin for “Light of the Moon” and the name conveys the contrast between light and dark that is at the heart of this theme.

iPhone 6+ support is next on my to-do list. However, I do not own a 6+ and do not have access to the @3x graphics files it uses. I will need a few of these graphics to build an @3x template that isn't pixelated from scaling up the @2x version. It should take someone all of 5 minutes to grab the png files I need via SSH. If you are interested in helping me out with this, please email me.

Design Principles

Lux Lunae employs a consistent design language inspired by iOS 7/8. All icons begin with a dark, transparent background meant to mimic the Notification Center. A thin border that is the same thickness as the toggles found in Control Center, surrounds the icon and gives it a definite size on darker backgrounds. The icon glyph tries to stay true to iOS 7/8’s icon grid whenever possible, and the color is chosen to match the app within. The result is a theme that changes subtly with your choice of wallpaper, yet remains cohesive and consistent.

Your Wallpaper, Shining Through

One of the most beautiful aspects of iOS 7/8’s design is how the appearance of the system changes subtly based on your choice of wallpaper. Lux Lunae aims to extend this to the home screen icons. The semi-transparent backgrounds subtly change color with your wallpaper and allow new details to shine through. A selection of recommended wallpapers can be found on my blog (see link below).

Ongoing Support

At this time, all the default apps, as well as a limited number of 3rd party apps are themed. I plan to continue adding new icons as regularly as possible. However, I have a full-time job and only am able to work on this theme in my spare time.

I have decided to make Lux Lunae available free of charge. I designed this theme for fun and because I thought the default iOS 7 icons were ugly. I don’t see any need to charge money for something I enjoyed doing, especially when most paid themes on Cydia are just pirated anyway. All that being said, if you enjoy this theme and would like to make a donation, it would certainly be appreciated.

NOTE: Due to the way iOS 7 handles icon graphics, unthemed icons will appear as square. This is an unavoidable byproduct of the method used to get the icon backgrounds to be transparent. Please do not send me support emails saying unthemed icons are square-I already know! :)
